Ready to level up your sleep habits?

Published about 1 year ago • 2 min read

Happy Monday and welcome to Sleep Better Weekly!

This week we are going to:

  • see the results of our DST poll
  • learn the benefits of address vs. stress
  • take a Taking Work Home with You poll
  • level up your sleep 1% at a time

The Results are In!

Our last poll asked what, if anything, you do differently to account for the 1-hour DST time change.

71% of you chose "I change my clocks and go about my life as usual." I was actually a little surprised by that high percentage, given that my audience has some degree of difficulty with sleep.

Bedtime Story

A few respondents to our last poll DID take some sort of action to account for the 1-hour time change and I think that's worth exploring as well.

Keeping the same schedule, no matter what the clock says, seems to be the second most popular strategy. At first blush, it may seem like that is EXACTLY the same as changing clocks and going about life as usual, but there is a slight difference...intention.

Making a decision to go to go to bed earlier to help get your body ready for the change or sleeping in a bit the first day to make sure you get the same amount of sleep are measures taken deliberately to ADDRESS the time change.

The opposite of that might look like getting mad about the time change, thinking how unfair it is, expecting to feel like crap for the first week, lying awake dreading the next day or hitting the snooze button repeatedly. I would call that STRESSing the time change.

When we make calm, deliberate decisions to address the time change or any other circumstances outside of our control, we save ourselves a lot of stress in the long run.

Sleep Study

This week's poll asks a few questions about taking your work home with you and how that may be affecting your sleep.

Tips for Leveling Up Your Sleep Habits

Want to get better sleep, but not sure where to start? It can be tempting to set a huge, audacious goal as that can seem pretty exciting...at first. But when the excitement wears off, it might feel like too much too soon and you just quit altogether.

I love the approach of 1% level ups. Something small that is doable for where you are right now. Something easy to keep up and build upon.

Here's an example: I have a goal of zero screen time 1-hour prior to bedtime. Right now, that would feel hard for me to do all at once, so I am currently aiming to have all screens off before 10 at least one day a week. When that feels normal, I can work toward a whole hour and then work toward more days.

It might take me a while to get to my ultimate goal, but along the way I am building a solid habit and still benefitting from the 1% level ups I'm implementing and continuing.

My first encounter with stinging nettle occurred not long after I moved into my current home 15 years ago. After some initial interior and exterior improvement projects, my husband and I decided it would be ever so much fun to have a vegetable garden in the back yard. We'd both grown up with home gardens and thought it would be something rewarding we could do together. The main barrier to getting our garden up and running was grass. And by grass, I mean a little grass and a lot of weeds. So,...

Confession This confession isn't super juicy, but it does involve juice. I am OBSESSED with marmalade. Not just the typical orange marmalade you find in the grocery store. I am obsessed with interesting homemade marmalades, bonus points if they're made with an atypical fruit base. Last year I delved into jams and made some very satisfying batches of strawberry and pineapple jams, but marmalade is like a whole other tier of toast topping. I'll blame my marmalade mania on all those cozy British...
